SAF, the fuel that will clean the skies and Spain wants to produce millions of tonnes

It is only 2%, but it represents the beginning of a path that should culminate in 25 years. The first step was taken on January 1. The last one, according to the plan, will take place in 2050. By then, aircraft should stop emitting polluting emissions and the kerosene now used in their engines should have been completely replaced by clean and renewable alternatives. For now, the ‘green’ option is SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), a liquid fuel with the same technical characteristics as kerosene but which manages to reduce CO₂ emissions by between 80% and 100%. The ‘ReFuelEU Aviation’ regulation establishes that from the beginning of this year all aircraft must have a mixed fuel in which at least 2% is SAF. Within fifteen years it should reach 70%. Not surprisingly, aviation is, today, one of the sources of the greatest pollution and its decarbonisation to clean the skies is urgent. The consumption of kerosene in our country has not stopped increasing. Tourism, that economic engine that has become a pillar of GDP in Spain, arrives for the most part by plane and with it, the pollution of the air we breathe. If in 2015 207 million travellers arrived in Spain, only in the first ten months of last year 287 million did so. In 2024, the planes in which tourists arrived consumed around 7.3 million tons of kerosene, at a rate of between 500,000 and 700,000 tons per month.
