Africa possesses “immense renewable energy potential and grapples with substantial energy needs
The director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Francesco La Camera, estimated that in 2024 new renewable energy capacity globally was around 500 GW, a record after reaching 473 GW in 2023, although only 1.6% of that figure corresponds to Africa, an opportunity he considered “lost”. This was indicated at the start of the XV annual assembly of Irena, the first global energy event to be held in 2025 and also the first of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), organised by the Emirati renewable giant Masdar. Despite these record-setting figures, La Camera indicated that global capacity “must reach 11.2 TW by 2030”, a deadline to meet what was agreed at the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai: tripling renewable energy capacity globally and doubling the global average annual rate of improvements in energy efficiency.
