The bovine meat sector contributes to the production of quality food for the population and the development of rural areas. However, it also contributes to the generation of environmental impacts on the environment that sustains it. The BOVIGREEN operational group project is based on the hypothesis that there are farm strategies that improve the productivity of this sector, while reducing its environmental impacts. Detecting these strategies, optimizing them and generalizing their use is essential to ensure the competitiveness of the sector.

To achieve this goal, this Project proposes to develop sustainability indicators applicable on a real scale both at the farm level and at the sector level, including productive and environmental behavior. These indicators will form the basis for:

  • define the starting situation.
  • apply productive and environmental improvements on farms
  • demonstrate to administrations and society as a whole the role that this sector plays in protecting the environment.

The operating group aims to contribute to generating innovation and improving the processes of the beef supply chain. Propose and write a research project aimed at developing models of circular economy and reduction of the environmental footprint in meat products from beef; development of individualized environmental behavior benchmarks and sustainability or environmental footprint indicators, in order to offer more efficient beef in the use of resources through the development of environmental footprint indicators, triggering more environmental benefits, improving processes and generating innovation in the supply chain.

In addition, the application of principles of sustainable management of natural resources and waste generated by primary activity, in particular, livestock, is the response to the growing environmental demand, and represents a significant effort for the sector and administrations.

The development of this Operational Group is within the framework of the National Rural Development Program, financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (FEADER). The Operational Group SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT MODELS OF BOVINE FARMING FOR MEAT CONSUMPTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT DESIGN (BOVIGREEN), is approved by EAFRD and 80% co-financed by the European Union, with a budget of €53,640.00

Objectives and Expected Results

The objectives of this operational group are included in the identification of management models that allow reducing the environmental footprint of cattle farms for meat production. It includes the introduction of circular economy methodologies, the optimization of production processes, energy consumption, food and the integral cycle of the production process from the livestock sector.

General objective: Improve sustainability in the meat sector using environmental footprint indicators and social and economic indicators (integrated approach).

Specific objectives:

  • Establish applicable sustainability indicators in bovine meat farms.
  • Define the situation of beef cattle farms in terms of productivity and environmental sustainability.
  • Identify and apply productive and environmental improvements in farms.
  • demonstrate the role of the sector in protecting the environment.

Expected results:

  • Implementation of a set of economic and social indicators.
  • Apply the set of indicators to a sample of farms.
  • Identify the main axes for improving environmental impact and economic sustainability.

Participants

The National Association of Meat Industries of Spain (ANICE) is a non-profit business organization made up of more than 600 companies in the meat sector (slaughterhouses, cutting plants and meat processing industries), distributed throughout the Spanish geography.

ANICE is the largest meat association in Spain, both for the number of companies and for their joint production, which exceeds 60% of the national total; standing out in some products, such as those derived from the Iberian pig, where more than 90% of the total is reached.

The Association represents and defends the interests of the meat industry, not only at a national level, but also at a European and international level. ANICE is the only Spanish organization that represents the meat industry in the Spanish Federation of Food and Drink Industries (FIAB).

ASOPROVAC is the most representative professional organization of the Spanish beef cattle production sector, grouping 70% of the country's production and with more than 1,800 associates throughout the national territory. It is a business association based in Madrid and made up of regional associations, currently with delegations in Aragon, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León and Catalonia, as well as associated producers in the rest of Spain.

ASOPROVAC aims to ensure the defense of the interests of Spanish beef cattle farmers. Its main function is, therefore, to represent and defend these interests before the regional, national and community administrations.

The Association works to analyze legislative and market trends trying to guide and sensitize the sector in those necessary aspects. It has a team of agronomists and veterinarians, specialized in the production of beef. To do this, it puts its knowledge at the service of associates and provides them with ongoing training and legal advice.

The Empresa y Clima Foundation (FEC) was born with the aim of being the benchmark for overcoming current environmental challenges and, in particular, those posed by climate change. The FEC arises in response to an explicit demand from the business sector, but its ambition is to help promote climate and environmental action by all economic and social actors.

Most of the activities and projects carried out by the FEC can integrate different perspectives such as advice, training or legal, technical and marketing consultancy. We work with both SMEs and large companies, as well as third sector organizations and public sector entities, in order to provide a global response to a global challenge that affects us all equally.

The Bovine sector is one of the sectors that is considered relevant in the path of reducing GHG emissions, in addition to being a sector of great economic importance, which is why it fits perfectly into the Foundation's corporate purpose.

The purpose of the public company Ihobe is to support the Basque Government in the development of environmental policy and in the extension of the culture of environmental sustainability. Ihobe provides services in the fields of air, soil, waste, the natural environment and companies. In addition, it supports the Vice-Ministry of the Environment in the development of strategic projects.

The Basque Government Department of the Environment and its public company Ihobe are committed to environmental awareness and education, to simplifying environmental administrative requirements and procedures for people and companies, for R&D projects related to climate change, for stop the loss of biodiversity and to guarantee a clean and healthy environment.

In this context, a roadmap has been designed in which the environmental actions entrusted to Ihobe revolve around 5 strategic objectives of the environmental policy, including the conservation of ecosystems and the improvement of environmental quality. .

NEIKER-Tecnalia is committed to the following R&D&i objectives on which it focuses its work:

Improve the productivity and competitiveness of agricultural production systems.

Develop and apply new management technologies on farms.

Meet the quality and safety requirements of the agri-food processing industry, its products and the consumer.

In addition to R+D+i projects, NEIKER-Tecnalia carries out knowledge transfer and training actions, having its own resources and infrastructures, as well as highly qualified personnel in the agri-food sector.

Novadays is a private research and consulting company, with a long history as an adviser in the design, execution and evaluation of R&D policies and programs. Novadays services, within the framework of business R&D&I, address issues related to four different areas: Research, development and innovation strategies; Operational management of R&D&i; Green transformation; Internationalization of R&D&i.

In relation to the object of the Operative Group that is intended to be constituted, Novadays has extensive experience in the agri-food sector. Among those that stand out: Technical office of the energy crop project program (6 projects) of the CSIC; Agent of innovation and technical and economic management of the CDTI FEDER INNTERCONECTA YELLOWHORN project; Agent of innovation and technical and economic management of the CDTI FEDER INNTERCONECTA ATENA project; Agent of innovation and technical and economic management of the CDTI FEDER INNTERCONECTA GR 2020 project.

The Institute of Animal Science and Technology of the UPV is specialized in the fields of animal production, animal nutrition, animal genetic improvement and aquaculture, being a national benchmark in these areas. The Livestock and Environment group is dedicated to the study and modernization of livestock production systems, and to the evaluation and reduction of the environmental impacts generated by livestock; being a national benchmark in livestock and environment.

Cabinet studies: the group has experience in estimating emissions in national emissions inventories in the agricultural sector. He has contributed to the development of methodological guides by which nutrient excretions and emissions to the atmosphere are calculated in the different livestock sectors. He has experience in modeling environmental impacts and evaluating mitigation strategies.

Field studies: the UPV livestock and environment group was a pioneer in measuring emissions from intensive farms in Spain. It has equipment and knowledge to determine these emissions in commercial farms. This allows the level of these emissions to be quantified and emission reduction strategies to be evaluated.
