Von der Leyen presents 4 plans to end fossil fuels: OPEC comes to the crossroads

In a context where the energy transition is presented as a global challenge, Ursula Von der Leyen is setting out an ambitious plan to accelerate the use of renewable energies. Meanwhile, OPEC opposes this view, underlining oil’s permanence in the global energy mix.

To this end, he stated four fundamental areas of action: first, he stressed the importance of planning. “Governments must integrate our global ambitions into their national climate policies, showing how they will contribute to global goals during this decade,” he said. In Europe, progress is already being made: in the first half of 2023, 50% of electricity in the European Union came from renewable sources. However, he acknowledged that the work is far from over.
