Utilities sink CO₂ emissions to historic lows due to renewables boom

The Spanish electricity system returns to the path of declines broken by the energy crisis and cuts its greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere by 28% in 2023.

The massive deployment of new renewable energy plants is causing a jolt in electricity production in Spain. The flood of green installations has allowed the Spanish electricity system to make history and last year generate for the first time more than half of all its energy with renewable technologies (50.4%), surpassing the sum of the production of nuclear, gas-fired power plants and coal-fired plants. And this boom in renewables has made it possible for utilities to sink their greenhouse gas emissions to historic lows.
