Global wind targets aim to double, but not triple

The world is a long way from fulfilling the promise made at last year’s global climate talks to triple the amount of wind power, according to a report from Ember.

Tripling renewables is the biggest measure to reduce emissions this decade and keep the 1.5°C target within reach.
At the UN’s COP28 climate change conference in December 2023, world leaders reached a historic agreement to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) show that a global tripling of renewables to at least 11,000 GW by 2030 is the optimal pathway to keep the 1.5°C target within reach.
More than 90% of renewable capacity growth is expected to come from solar and wind, with wind capacity itself also expected to triple from 901 GW in 2022 to 2,742 GW in 2030.
This would mean that wind power would generate almost a fifth (19%) of the world’s electricity supply by 2030.
