20 years of climate policy: a study looks at what works and what doesn’t

The journal Science today publishes an analysis of 1,500 actions against climate change carried out in 41 countries over the last two decades (1998-2022) and their impact on reducing emissions, showing what works and what does not to comply with the Paris Agreement.

Of the 1,500 measures studied in the construction, electricity, industry and transport sectors, the researchers highlight 63 that have been really effective and to which they attribute the reduction in emissions of between 600 and 1,800 million tonnes of CO₂.

In the specific case of Spain, the study highlights as a success the reduction of emissions from transport, especially private road mobility, due to the taxation for hydrocarbons and circulation implemented in 2008.
