The Needs of Climate Finance

To prevent catastrophic climate change and accelerate the global transition to a net-zero economy, policymakers and asset owners must urgently rethink how we channel capital at scale. The key is to develop new financial instruments that are cost-effective, liquid, and easily accessible to savers and investors around the world.

As we traverse UN Climate Week and head into COP28 in Dubai later this year, we need to stop the “green desire” and “greenwashing” and start thinking about the instruments that will enable the private sector and private investors to channel more capital towards climate resilience and sustainability.
While the public sector has an important role to play in this regard, scalable solutions require significant commitments of resources from the private sector. Now that climate change is already wreaking havoc in both poor and rich countries, unlocking this largely untapped pool of capital has become an urgent priority.
