European governments are inclined to lower emissions requirements for cars until 2035

The Spanish presidency of the Council reaches an agreement on the Euro 7 regulation that reduces the ambition of the European Commission’s original proposal

European governments are inclined to reduce the requirements that the Euro 7 regulation will impose in a few years’ time on cars, vans and trucks registered in the European Union until 2035, i.e. in the period before the ban on combustion engines comes into force. The Council of European Competitiveness Ministers reached an agreement on Monday on the compromise text proposed by the Spanish presidency to try to bring positions closer between the defenders and opponents of the measure, by softening the requirements for reducing CO₂ emissions and delaying its entry into force. The text, which keeps the emission caps intact with respect to the current regulations, must now be negotiated with the European Parliament.
