Maritime transport will pay in Europe for its emissions from 2024

The EU will create a fund of 1.6 billion for sectoral innovation and will also penalize LNG vessels for methane leaks

The EU institutions have reached a preliminary agreement to include maritime transport in the Emissions Trading System (ETS). The aforementioned agreement includes a gradual introduction of the sector in emissions trading from 2024 to 2027, and the constitution of a fund of 1,600 million euros. This fund will come from the rights acquired by shipowners and will be destined to investment in innovation to boost the energy transition in the industry.
