Strasbourg approves law to reduce methane emissions from the energy sector

The new law approved by the European Parliament, the first European regulation designed to reduce methane levels, will allow the EU to reduce emissions from the energy sector to achieve the EU’s climate goals and improve air quality to mitigate the effects of this greenhouse gas with a warming capacity 80 times greater than that of carbon dioxide (CO₂). The new regulation covers direct emissions from the oil, fossil gas and coal sectors, and also from biomethane once it is injected into the gas grid. In addition, the requirements of the new standard will also apply to imports of oil, gas and coal from 2027.
