European Parliament approves tougher emissions standards for trucks and buses

The European Parliament approved stricter rules for the reduction of CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks, buses and trailers in a plenary session in Brussels in order to improve air quality in the European Union (EU).

The regulation, approved in plenary by 341 votes in favour, 268 against and 14 abstentions, contemplates that buses and lorries – including refuse collection vehicles, dump trucks and concrete mixers – must reduce their CO₂ emissions by 45% in 2030-2034, 65% in 2035-2039 and 90% from 2040. On the other hand, city buses will have to reduce their emissions by 90% by 2030 until they are neutralised from 2035, as stated in the Parliament’s statement.
