Sánchez asks Brussels to maintain the veto on combustion cars in 2035

The President of the Government assures that the moratorium on plug-in hybrid vehicles would curb the demand for 100% electric vehicles, which are the only ones that guarantee mobility free of CO₂ emissions.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, has asked the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a letter to maintain the veto on the sale of new cars with combustion engines in 2035, on the eve of the EU executive presenting next Tuesday a proposal to partially lift the veto on vehicles with a combustion engine and relieve the European automotive industry.

“We reject that vehicles with combustion engines or other technologies without proven viability can continue to be marketed beyond 2035,” Sánchez writes in the letter dated December 11.
The President of the Government disagrees with the European Commission’s decision, advanced by MEP and EPP President Manfred Weber to the German newspaper ‘Bild’, to allow the sale of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles with extended range from 2035, provided that they are manufactured in the EU.
