The priorities of the COP30 on climate change to be held in Brazil

André Correa do Lago, president of the Conference of the Parties (COP30) on climate change, which will take place later this year, published his first official letter. In the document, he announced the priorities of the conference that will bring together nearly 200 countries to talk, in general terms, about the challenges of climate change.

“COP30 will be the first to be held undeniably at the epicenter of the climate crisis and the first in the Amazon, one of the most vital ecosystems in the world, which is now at risk of reaching an irreversible tipping point, according to scientists,” said the president of the event that will take place in Belém, Brazil.

Correa do Lago stressed that this COP will mark 20 years since the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol (an international agreement that seeks to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions), and 10 years since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, (an international treaty that seeks to limit global warming and adapt to its effects). For this reason, from his perspective, the event “must be the moment of hope and possibilities through action, never of paralysis and fragmentation,” he said. “We must face climate change together and reactivate our collective and individual capacity to respond,” added the secretary of Climate, Energy and Environment of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
