Why the U.S. Wants to Take the Lead in the Race for Critical Minerals

USA seeks access to critical minerals, either through an agreement with Ukraine (currently paused) or through domestic production

On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump hinted at efforts to increase production of critical minerals essential to sectors such as semiconductors, aerospace and defense. “Later this week, I will also take historic steps to dramatically expand production of critical minerals and rare earths here in the U.S.,” Trump said during his speech to Congress. Industry analysts note that the U.S. Geological Survey has identified more than 50 critical minerals needed for nearly every type of modern technology. Among them, a subset known as “rare earth minerals” is key to the manufacture of magnets used in products such as electronic devices, electric vehicles, power grids, and defense equipment.
