GlobalCO2 emissions hit a record high in 2024

Fossil carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions reached 37.4 billion tonnes in 2024, 0.8% more than in 2023. This is the main conclusion of the Global Carbon Budget report, which we recover on the occasion of the World Day for the Reduction of CO₂ Emissions, which is celebrated today. Beyond the absolute data, in which China continues to lead, it is worth reviewing the classification of per capita emissions, as this data defines the impact of the lifestyle of societies on the environment and can make citizens reflect on the way they consume. Especially when countries with far fewer inhabitants than China have a very significant carbon footprint per capita.

Today is World Day for the Reduction of CO₂ Emissions, an environmental event sponsored by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness and encourage people around the world to contribute to the care of the environment and the planet by reducing their carbon footprint.
