Climate change could lead to 2.3 million temperature-related deaths in Europe by the end of the century

The Mediterranean region is one of the most vulnerable. Due to its population and location, Barcelona is the city with the highest number of temperature-related deaths in Europe. Madrid and Valencia, among the top 10.

A new study led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and involving the Doñana Biological Station-CSIC, under the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, reveals that climate change could directly lead to more than 2.3 million additional temperature-related deaths by 2099 if urgent action is not taken to reduce carbon emissions. Up to 70% of these deaths could be avoided if action is taken quickly. The analysis shows that climate change could cause a significant increase in heat deaths across Europe, substantially outpacing any decrease in cold-related deaths.
