Germany commits to weaning off fossil fuels for the first time by 2045

The plan raises the renewable share from 55% to 80% of the electricity mix by 2030 and provides for 215 GW of solar. It maintains the exit from coal in 2038, with the door open to bringing it forward to 2035.

Germany has set for the first time the exit from fossil fuels in 2045 within its climate roadmap, a commitment that exceeds its previous goal of carbon neutrality and that reorders the energy transition of Europe’s largest economy. The document, published on Wednesday, September 23, incorporates for the first time the explicit formula of ‘abandoning’ fossil fuels. Until now, Berlin has only committed to achieving carbon neutrality, a goal that admits offsets and does not force the tap on gas, oil or coal to be turned off. The difference is not semantic: it decides what is measured, what is audited and what can then be demanded of a government.
