Europe’s carbon tariffs take their first steps

Inland importers of steel, aluminium, iron and fertilisers have to report greenhouse gases generated at source

It doesn’t appear among the usual suspects, but steelmaking accounts for between 7% and 9% of all greenhouse gases on the planet, and 22% of the European Union’s industrial emissions. More than enough to deserve a starring role in the CBAM, the EU’s carbon tariff that began its difficult mission in January: to fight global warming without harming the bloc’s industry or undermining free trade rules.
