Average warming in the region has already reached approximately +1.5°C and is projected to increase between +2.2°C and +5.6°C by 2100, depending on different emissions scenarios.
The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the network of Mediterranean Scientists on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC) have called for “immediate and coordinated” measures to address the climate and environmental crisis. In addition, they have warned that the Mediterranean could warm up to 5.6ºC by 2100 depending on emissions.
The Mediterranean, a “critical” point in the world’s climate
This has been expressed by the Deputy Secretary General of the UfM, Grammenos Mastrojeni, and the EFIMED Senior Scientist and member of the MedECC network, Professor Magda Bou Dagher Kharrat, since the Climate Summit (COP30), which is being held these days in Belém (Brazil). There, both experts presented the scientific findings extracted from the latest available research and stressed that the Mediterranean is a “critical” point in the world’s climate.
