e-SAF in Spain multiplies the price of fossil kerosene by seven

According to the latest ECODES report, producing one tonne of e-SAF costs between €5,631 and €8,325, depending on the cost of green hydrogen and the CO₂ capture technology used
Spain faces the challenge of decarbonising its aviation with a major obstacle: the cost of sustainable synthetic fuel, known as e-SAF, which is seven times more expensive than fossil kerosene and twice as expensive as that produced from waste (HEFA). This is what a new ECODES report on the economic and environmental impact of sustainable fuels under the European ReFuelEU Aviation regulation warns. The European Union has implemented the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which obliges all airports of a certain size to progressively use sustainable fuels. In the case of Spain, the goal is to go from 2% SAF in 2025 (147,780 tonnes) to 70% in 2050 (5.17 million tonnes). Within that target, at least 35% must be e-SAF, the synthetic fuel that is produced with renewable electricity, water and CO₂ captured from the atmosphere.
