The 1.5ºC limit of the Paris Agreement, getting closer and closer

The year 2025 will be among the three warmest recorded since 1850, with an average of 15.08ºC

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned on Wednesday that 2025 was one of the three warmest years since at least 1850. The global average temperature of the earth’s surface was 15.08 degrees, which is 1.44ºC more than the pre-industrial average (from 1850 to 1900).

At the current rate of warming, the long-term limit of 1.5ºC contemplated in the 2015 Paris Agreement to avoid the worst effects of climate change could be reached around 2030, more than ten years earlier than expected, reports Efe. The WMO confirmed that last year was one of the three warmest, according to eight datasets from meteorological agencies around the world. In two of them 2025 was the second warmest in 176 years of statistics, and in six the third. The agency also pointed out that the last 11 years remain the warmest since records began, and that the La Niña phenomenon that currently influences the global climate, which is usually associated with a drop in temperatures, is not being able to reverse global warming in the long term.
