The EU has tripled its carbon tax revenues in six years

The revenues obtained by the European Union (EU) through the carbon dioxide (CO₂) tax tripled between 2017 and 2023, from 15,000 to 51,000 million euros, and came mainly from the energy sector, in a context in which Spain accounted for 6% of the contributions.

This is according to an analysis published on Thursday by the EU statistical office Eurostat, on the evolution of the tax on goods and services whose production generates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, since 2017, the first year in which the agency recorded an average European figure.

Between 2017 and 2023, revenues from CO₂-related taxes rose from €15 billion in 2017 to €51 billion in 2023.

As a result of this increase, carbon taxation went from representing 6% of total energy taxes in 2017 to 20% in 2023.
