The EU adopts its proposal to relieve the automotive sector with the cut inCO2

The European Commission on Tuesday adopted its proposal to relieve the car industry in the face of pressure from the United States and China, giving manufacturers more flexibility in the immediate cut of CO₂ in cars and vans and protectionist measures to shield the sector.

After weeks of dialogue with the industry, the EU executive announced in early March its plans to breathe oxygen into manufacturers, which it is now giving the form of legislative revision through an amendment to the CO₂ emissions regulation for cars and vans, which will still have to be validated by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU (the countries).

The amendment gives brands an additional two years to meet the target of a 15% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to 2021 values, initially planned for 2025, allowing it to be offset until 2027.

“It shows that we have listened, understood the concerns and acted to resolve them, while maintaining our net-zero targets,” Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said in a statement.
