Global Biodiversity Deal Mobilizes $200 Billion for Nature

The strategy is expected to protect biodiversity and fragile ecosystems that are suffering from increased conflict, deforestation, mining, toxic waste dumping and other environmental impacts around the world.

Governments reached an agreement on Friday on a strategy to raise an additional $200 billion each year in order to better protect the planet’s flora and fauna by 2030. Delegates met in Rome this week to resume the UN Conference on Biodiversity and reach an agreement at COP16.2, after attempts to reach an agreement on finance at COP16 in Cali, Colombia, failed last November. The hard-won decisions of parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity are expected to protect biodiversity and fragile ecosystems that are suffering the consequences of increased conflict, deforestation, mining, toxic waste dumping and other environmental impacts around the world.
