“Green energy” that is losing weight in Europe: the EU depends on nuclear energy, but generates less and less electricity with it

Italy and Germany have closed their nuclear plants, while Spain and Belgium will do so soon. In contrast, France, Finland and Poland defend it to reduce emissions and guarantee energy supply.

The European Union recognises nuclear energy as “an alternative to fossil fuels”, and, since July 2022, has considered it a green energy. Almost three years ago, the European Parliament approved the inclusion of nuclear, along with natural gas, in the EU’s green taxonomy, a classification system that determines which investments can be considered environmentally sustainable. This decision was made on the grounds that they can contribute to the energy transition and the reduction of carbon emissions, since their production does not generate greenhouse gases. In addition, nuclear energy accounts for approximately 22.8% of the electricity generated on the continent.
