Germany is expected to remain a net emitter beyond 2045

Germany to cut emissions by 95 percent by 2050, according to DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook report

Germany could continue to emit greenhouse gases beyond its 2045 deadline to become climate neutral, and Norwegian certification company DNV forecasts an 89 percent reduction in emissions compared to 1990 by then. Germany would reduce emissions by 95 percent by 2050, according to DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook report.

The inaugural German Energy Transition Outlook (ETO) concludes that Germany is on track to electrify nearly half of its electricity demand by mid-century, but will fall short of its goal of climate neutrality by 2045. One of the main advantages for Germany is that its energy mix will change dramatically. Imports, which currently account for 70% of Germany’s primary energy, will fall to 27% by 2050, making the country much less dependent on energy imports. Imports of coal and oil will decrease by 99% and 79% respectively.
