EC must “immediately” correct the collection of the tax on non-recycled plastics, according to a report by the European Court of Auditors

The new system implemented in the European Union in 2021 to provide the EU executive with its own budgetary resources through a tax on plastics that Member States did not recycle fails, according to a report by the EU Court of Auditors, which calls on the European Commission (EC) to “immediately” correct the deficiencies detected.

“After 33 years of using the same own resources, the EU introduced in 2021 an additional source of revenue based on non-recycled plastic packaging waste generated by Member States. However, the way in which it is calculated still has too many inadequacies,” the auditor responsible for the analysis, Lefteris Christoforou, summarized on Monday.
