Breton’s departure does not change Von der Leyen’s plans to present her team on Tuesday

The plan of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to present her team of commissioners for the next legislature on Tuesday is going ahead despite the abrupt departure of one of the heavyweights of the previous EU executive, the Frenchman Thierry Breton, through an explosive letter published on Monday.

The German maintains her plan to go first thing in the morning to the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament – which brings together the group leaders and the president of the institution – to explain the distribution of responsibilities and will appear later, at a press conference, to reveal the structure of the next Commission.

The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, met Von der Leyen in Strasbourg on Monday and then shared an image of the meeting on social networks with the message that Parliament is ready to begin the scrutiny of the candidates, once their new positions are public.
