This is a preliminary assessment of the risks associated with the climate, carried out by the network of Mediterranean experts on climate and environmental change (MedECC) in 2019.
In the Mediterranean basin, the main environmental problems are caused by the combination of changes in land use, increased pollution and decreased biodiversity. In most impact areas (such as water, ecosystems, food, health and safety), current change and future scenarios constantly point to significant and increasing risks over the coming decades.
Policies for the sustainable development of Mediterranean countries must mitigate these risks and consider adaptation options with adequate information despite having fewer systematic observation schemes and established impact models.
