Von der Leyen wants more investment in nuclear fusion research

The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, on Thursday highlighted the “potential” of nuclear fusion to produce safe and clean energy and advocated attracting more private sector investment to this area of research.

Faced with growing demand for electricity, nuclear fusion technology would be “ideal” to complete the contribution of renewables to the energy mix in the future, von der Leyen said during a visit to the nuclear reactor at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching, southern Germany.
