Arrives at the European Commission to replace Frans Timmermans

The former foreign minister of the Netherlands, the Christian Democrat Wopke Hoekstra, has finally been elected the next commissioner for climate change after the departure of Frans Timmermans.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen appointed Hoekstra as climate commissioner early last week. “His government experience will be a great asset, in particular for Europe’s climate diplomacy ahead of COP28 and for climate finance, as well as for the implementation of climate-related legislative instruments,” he added.
