An alliance of countries seeks to stop algorithms from rewarding misinformation

Twelve countries, including Spain, are joining forces to combat false content on social networks that is undermining the fight against climate change. Tech companies will be required to review their algorithms
“There is no possible victory in the climate fight in this context of disinformation.” The phrase is repeated by Julia Steinberger, professor of Social Ecology and Ecological Economics and co-author of the sixth IPCC report. Their thesis is that the scientific evidence – increasingly convincing – is not enough to make citizens aware of the urgent need to act against climate change. It is necessary, he says, to attack the gigantic communication machinery that spreads hoaxes on social networks, one of the main channels for disseminating information. Their concern, shared by much of the scientific community, has jumped into politics. At COP30, an alliance of 12 countries has been formed – Spain, among them – to counteract the false content that is delaying climate action. Big tech companies will be required to review the design of their algorithms, which reward and multiply misinformation.
