A total of 25 countries and the EU promise to do without coal in their new climate plans

Rapidly reducing carbon emissions is one of the most urgent priorities to comply with the Paris Agreement and prevent warming from worsening, say the promoters of the initiative.
A total of 25 countries and the European Union have made public their commitment not to use “new coal” in their energy systems; in addition, they will make it effective in their new climate action plans that they must present to the UN in the coming months. The big argument is that rapid reductions in carbon emissions are needed as an urgent priority to achieve the goal set in the Paris Agreement (not exceeding the 1.5°C warming limit).
