The UN designates the Canary Islands as a place of excellence against climate change

The United Nations has declared the Canary Islands a place of excellence in measures to combat climate change. It has been announced during the Climate Summit (COP25) that is being held in Madrid during this week. This decision, of international rank, has been valued by the regional president, Ángel Víctor Torres, as a “firm step” towards sustainability in the islands, as well as positive news, not only for the Canary Islands, but for all of Spain.

This designation is another boost to the good work of the archipelago in sustainable matters, which has not only had political but also social involvement, as the regional president commented, pointing out that the law against climate change of the Parliament of the Canary Islands already has 170 contributions from citizens. Likewise, Torres also confirmed the purchase of 40 electric vehicles by the regional government to renew its fleet. Likewise, in the 2020 budgets there is an item for municipalities to invest in electric taxis.

In the same way, the President referred to the intention of the new central government to locate in the Canary Islands the Observatory against Climate Change throughout Spain, something that the current acting president, Pedro Sánchez, claims to have committed. Ángel Víctor Torres defended that the archipelago deserves to host this observatory because it is “a territory with unbeatable conditions to deepen the development of renewable energies”, since it has many hours of sun, wind and sea.

In addition, he referred to El Hierro as the example of an island with almost complete electricity self-sufficiency during the year through green or clean energies, a goal that the Government has set so that the Canary Islands can be a 100% sustainable community by 2050.
