The UN and the United Kingdom postpone the Climate Summit in Glasgow due to the coronavirus

The Climate Summit that was scheduled to be held in November in the British city of Glasgow, known as COP26, will also have to wait until 2021 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The UN and the British Government have decided on Wednesday to postpone this meeting, which was expected as a key meeting to relaunch the fight against climate change. All countries had to present during this conference plans to cut their greenhouse gas emissions more drastically, in addition to finalizing the Development of the Paris Agreement. To channel the November meeting, in which the representatives of almost 200 countries participate, a pre-summit had to be held in Bonn (Germany) in June of this year with the negotiating teams, something that is not considered possible at the moment with the existing restrictions around the world on movements. That is why it has been decided to move both appointments. The pre-summit will be held this October and COP26 will move to 2021, although the exact date has yet to be specified, United Nations sources have detailed.

Glasgow is the 26th climate summit. And it is considered the most important since the COP of 2015, in which the Paris Agreement was closed, because countries are expected to react with more powerful emissions cutting plans to the climate crisis.

The Paris Agreement aims to keep global warming within non-catastrophic limits. And that means that the increase in the average temperature of the planet does not exceed two degrees with respect to pre-industrial levels and, as far as possible, that it remains below 1.5. To do this, the greenhouse gases emitted by humans must be eliminated. And each country has to present an emissions cut plan when it ratifies the Paris Agreement. The problem is that the plans of the countries on the table now will lead to a temperature rise well above 3 degrees. That is why upward revisions of these national programmes are needed. And the presentation of the first official review by each state was scheduled to take place at the Glasgow summit.
