The stoppage of activity reduces energy consumption by 22% this week

The demand for energy consumption has fallen again so far this week to levels of 22% compared to the average on working days during this year, due to the stoppage of activity against the coronavirus to which the cessation of non-essential activities has now been added with an added impact.

According to data provided today to Efe by the Sustainability Observatory, based on the figures provided by Red Eléctrica Española (REE), the percentage decrease in demand for energy consumption confirms the downward trend of recent weeks, which has been progressively accentuated since the beginning of the confinement in homes to face the coronavirus crisis.

In the first week of confinement, the reduction in the demand for energy consumption in the country was 13% on weekdays, while in the second it was already at 15%, and now, at 22%.

“This will determine lower greenhouse gas emissions, and that today, for example, 70% of the energy that has been emitted is free of CO2,” according to the director of the Sustainability Observatory, Fernando Prieto.

Throughout today’s day, the impact on the demand for energy consumption of Royal Decree-Law 10/2020 published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) last Sunday will also be seen, which regulated the cessation of non-essential activities, and which established a deadline for the closure of the activity.

Among the facilities that had to stop working according to the decree are many belonging to the electro-intensive industry, which includes metallurgical, chemical, steel and other causes of large CO2 emissions.
