The Twenty-Seven agree to extend free CO₂ permits for intensive industry

The Twenty-seven agree to alleviate the cost of CO₂ by some 6,000 million euros for some of the most emitting industries in Europe, with the argument of avoiding relocations, while the measure reduces the effective price they face for their emissions.
The member states of the European Union agreed on Wednesday in Brussels to increase between 2026 and 2030 the free permits to emit CO2 received by energy-intensive industries, a measure with which they seek to reduce the risk of these sectors moving their production outside the community bloc. The decision will mean savings of about 6,000 million euros for these energy-intensive industries, according to the European Commission’s estimates collected by the Council of the EU.
