Climate change added 30 days of risky heat in Spain this summer

Human-caused climate change added 30 days of risky heat in Spain between June and August this year, in a summer in which the average temperature was 2.2 degrees above normal, according to an analysis by the scientific organization Climate Central. The study considers “risky hot days” those in which the average temperature exceeds 90% of those recorded in each place during the period 1991-2020, a level from which the risk to health increases. The average person in Spain experienced 62 days of risky heat, of which 30 would not have occurred without human-caused warming, according to Climate Central calculations. Among the Spanish cities analyzed, Madrid counted 57 days of risky heat, 41 of them added by climate change, while Barcelona added 74, of which 19 are attributed to global warming.
