The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will be present for the first time with an official pavilion at the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP27) with the aim of putting on the table the transformation of agri-food systems, sources from the institution confirmed to EFE today.
During the 27th edition of the COP, which will take place from 6 to 18 November in the Egyptian city of Sharm el Sheikh, FAO aims to promote a shared understanding of the most pressing food and agricultural issues facing people and the planet, as well as to share knowledge and innovative solutions.
The 250-square-meter Food and Agriculture Pavilion, focused on finding a solution to the climate crisis being discussed during the COP, will feature a program of events with “innovative initiatives to help countries take action to protect agri-food systems,” FAO said in a statement.
Qu Dongyu, Director-General Qu Dongyu, said the pavilion “will bring together local, national and global actors, including farmers and youth, to seek solutions with the intention of transforming agri-food systems and making them more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable, and ensuring that no one is left behind in our efforts to eradicate hunger and malnutrition.”
In addition to FAO, the consortium of CGIAR research centers and the Rockefeller Foundation are also part of the pavilion that has as a “backdrop” the year 2021, with more than 193 million people affected by crises or worse levels of acute food insecurity in 53 countries or territories.
“Millions more people are on the brink of food insecurity and threats to smallholder farmers’ livelihoods are on the rise,” said CGIAR Executive Director General Claudia Sadoff.
For his part, the president of the Rockefeller Foundation, Rajiv J. Shah, said that “climate change is a singular threat to humanity” and that it is not possible “to fully address it without building equitable, resilient and sustainable food systems that nourish both people and the planet.”
The climate meeting that will take place in Egypt with COP27 aims to articulate better financing of the climate response in developing countries in the sections of adaptation and loss and damage.
