European Union commits to doubling renewables by 2030

European Union member states and members of the European Parliament reached an agreement on Thursday to double renewable energy production across the bloc by the end of this decade.

According to the provisional agreement, reached after a long night of negotiations, the share of renewables in the EU’s total energy consumption should be 42.5 percent by 2030, with an additional “aspiration” of 2.5 percent to reach 45 percent.

In 2021, renewables accounted for 21.8 percent of the energy consumed in the EU, according to Eurostat.
