The EU will not cut its CO₂ emissions by 55% by 2030 or meet its renewables and efficiency targets

Renewable energy consumption is expected to be between 38.6% and 39.3% by 2030

The European Commission (EC) urged European Union (EU) countries to update their climate plans, following an initial assessment by Brussels that shows that the community bloc would only cut emissions by 51% by 2030, if national programs are not strengthened, which would not reach the legal minimum of 55%.

“We have to be credible to our societies and our partners, that’s why we have to continue with the collective effort (…). There is still a lot of work to be done,” Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson told the European Energy Ministers’ Council in Brussels on Tuesday. The EU official was referring to the analysis published by the European Commission on the integrated national energy and climate plans of twenty-one EU countries, which submitted their documents on time.
