The EU eases the carbon market to ease pressure on the industry.

The European Commission on Friday proposed a reform of the EU’s Emissions Trading System, which allows industries to emit CO₂ for longer and offers more financial support to invest in clean technologies in Europe. The ETS is the European Union’s most important policy on climate change. It forces power plants, airlines, and shipping companies to buy permits when they emit CO₂ and limits their total emissions. The long-planned reform of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) aims to extend the system into the coming decades and align it with the EU’s 2040 climate target of reducing net emissions by 90%. It also softens the scheme in response to pressure from industries and countries, such as Italy and Poland, which claim it hurts competitiveness. Brussels is trying to balance those concerns with warnings, including from Spain, that weakening the emissions trading system would punish industries that invested early in emissions reductions.
