EU cuts CO₂ emissions from fossil fuels by 8% to lowest levels in 60 years

The deployment of renewable energy, which has accelerated in recent years, is the main cause of Europe’s reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The European Union has stepped on the accelerator of decarbonisation and has managed, for the first time, to reduce CO₂ emissions linked to the burning of fossil fuels and bring them to levels not seen since the 1960s.

An analysis published by the Center for Research in Energy and Clean Air (CREA) reveals that European countries have achieved an 8% reduction, which would be the largest drop since records began and without counting the 2020 reduction associated with the pandemic.
