By fueling the growth of plants that turn into firewood, carbon dioxide is causing an increase in the severity and frequency of wildfires around the world.
The global increase in wildfires over the past decade is often attributed to warmer and drier conditions of climate change. However, a new study from the University of California, Riverside (UCR) found that the effect of rising carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels on plants may be a bigger factor.
“It’s not because it’s hotter that things burn, it’s because there’s more fuel, in the form of plants,” UCR earth and planetary sciences doctoral student and study author James Gomez said in a statement.
