The calculation of the carbon footprint for the largest companies, the selective collection of textile waste and the new regulations for labelling packaging are some of the obligations that will come into force in Spain on 1 January 2025.
The carbon footprint, one of the fundamental concepts of the ecological transition, refers to the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted in this case by companies, directly or indirectly, and its measurement is carried out in accordance with international standards, with the intention of applying reduction or compensation plans that allow them to be aligned with environmental policies. Until now, the calculation of the carbon footprint in business activities was voluntary in Spain, but Law 7/2021 established the obligation as of January 1 for certain companies that, in addition, will also be forced to develop and make public a specific GHG reduction plan. According to the information provided by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Madrid, the obligated companies will be those with an average of more than 500 employees, or that are considered entities of public interest according to the legislation on auditing of accounts. Those that meet two of these criteria at the end of the year for two consecutive years will also have to do so: a total consolidated assets of more than 20 million euros, an annual consolidated turnover of more than 40 million euros or an average of more than 250 employees during the year. These are the points at the national level, because the requirements at the regional level vary: for example, in the Balearic Islands it affects companies from 50 employees and 10 million euros per year invoiced and in Andalusia those that consume more than 1 GWh per year are also obligatory.
