Shell faces major CO₂ emissions trial in The Hague

The Dutch oil company seeks to overturn a landmark ruling that requires it to reduce its impact by 45% by 2030

The Dutch oil company Royal Dutch Shell faces a new step in its major legal battle over the emission of greenhouse gases this week. On the table is a landmark resolution against the global fossil fuel giant that obliges it to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 45% by 2030 compared to 2019. The appealed judgment was handed down by a judge in The Hague in 2021, following a lawsuit by the Dutch NGO Milieudefensie or Friends of the Earth Netherlands. This organisation claimed that the company emits substantially more than all Dutch companies and citizens combined.
