Will COP29 focus on food?

The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also called COP29 in Baku, will draw attention to food systems and their relationship to climate change. But will it focus on food as much as in the previous edition? COP28 marked a turning point by giving a central role to food systems in the climate agenda and this time it is expected to consolidate that trend.

From November 11 to 22, COP29 will be held in Baku (Azerbaijan), a meeting that will bring together representatives of countries, non-governmental organizations, companies and others, to discuss and negotiate measures to address climate change. This year, expectations are growing that this global climate conference will continue its focus on food systems and their relationship to climate change. Let us remember that COP28, which took place in Dubai, marked a change of direction by giving prominence to food in the context of climate action. For this reason, many wonder if COP29 will focus on food with equal or greater emphasis, since some studies point out that the global food system and its agricultural industry could cause both global warming and human activity.
