Sánchez proposes a state agency to coordinate with communities the fight against fires and damage

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, said on Monday that the wave of fires that have devastated 330,000 hectares in August is not “the result of chance, nor of an arsonist plot”, but the result of three fundamental factors: a “clearly insufficient” prevention policy, an “inadequate” management of the territory and a climate emergency situation that has made the fires “more virulent, unpredictable and lethal.” “Let’s be serious and rigorous,” Sánchez asked, at an event in which he presented the government’s ten commitments for a State pact against climate change that goes beyond political acronyms and transcends legislatures.

In an event focused on the State climate pact, the government’s star proposal for the start of the school year, the president, supported by his ministers, outlined the ten commitments included in this climate pact, including the creation of a new State Agency for Civil Protection and Emergencies to coordinate with the autonomous communities the management of emergencies such as fires and cut-offs. a management that must be decentralized, since “it is more effective”.

Other proposals are the provision of more permanent technical and human resources by all public administrations for the prevention and management of emergencies; the adaptation of municipalities to climate change, with the creation of spaces such as shadow corridors; to promote and establish a civic culture of protection; the creation of funds with permanent resources at the state and regional level and a commitment to pressure the European Union to advance environmental policies.
