Ribera charges against the freezing of the registration tax: “It is a demagogic gift”

The fourth vice president and minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, has considered a “demagogic gift” the freezing of the increase in the registration tax for this year achieved yesterday in the Congress of Deputies by the opposition of the Government.

In the session of control to the Executive in the Lower House, Ribera has stressed that this type of gifts “are not good either for the industry or for consumers.” He also stressed that European standards require that cars do not emit more than 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled. “Some parliamentary groups have decided to give away the registration up to 145 grams,” he added.

In addition, he has said that energy taxation is “a sensitive issue for domestic economies and industry”, as well as for the signals that you want to send to society.

On Tuesday, the opposition defeated the Government in the Congress of Deputies and achieved the freezing of the de facto increase planned for this year in the registration tax, by approving an amendment promoted by the PDeCAT in the new Law on measures to prevent and combat tax fraud.

The amendment was accepted with votes from the PP, Vox, Esquerra Republicana, Ciudadanos, the PDeCAT and the PRC. The PSOE and Unidas Podemos voted against and the PNV abstained. The proposal finally included in the bill that leaves Congress for the Senate keeps unchanged the taxation planned from this year, so that each vehicle has exactly the same tax burden as in 2020, despite the new measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions with the new WLTP procedure.

The Catalan party proposed that models that emit less than 144 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kilometer traveled do not pay the registration tax, while cars that emit less than 120 g / km are currently exempt from paying this tax.

It also modifies the rest of the steps, since vehicles that emit between 144 and 192 grams of CO2 would pay 4.75% of this tax (120-160 grams at present), while 9.75% would be paid by those customers who opted for cars that emit between 192 and 240 grams of CO2 (now it is in the 160-200 grams). The last tranche, to be paid for those vehicles that expel more than 240 grams, would be 14.75% (currently pay this percentage those who emit more than 200 grams of CO2 per kilometer).

Electricity bill

On the other hand, regarding the measures to lower the electricity bill, the minister has indicated that the Government is working on the penetration of renewables, as well as on “the promotion of energy efficiency and electrification”, as ways to do so.

In this regard, he said that the National Fund for the Sustainability of the Electric System (FNSSE), which will take the Executive to Congress in the coming weeks, will allow the electricity bill to be reduced in five years by an average of 12%. He also pointed out that the Government is also working on measures related to the functioning of the market, so that CO2 and gas “do not generate an increase” in the prices of all technologies.
